An antique line engraving by W.J. Edwards after S.E. Dubourjal. Circa 1865. During his tenure, U.S. President James K. Polk oversaw the greatest territorial expansion of the United States to date. Polk accomplished this through the annexation of Texas in 1845, the negotiation of the Oregon Treaty with Great Britain in 1846, and the conclusion of the Mexican-American War in 1848, which ended with the signing and ratification of the Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo in 1848.

An antique lithograph. Circa 1850. Williams was the son of Peter Williams, a Welsh Calvinist Methodist clergyman and biblical commentator, and was born in Llandyfaelog, Carmarthenshire, west Wales. After being educated at the grammar school in Carmarthen, he studied at the University of Oxford, matriculating from Jesus College, Oxford in 1785 and graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Christ Church, Oxford in 1790. He was ordained in 1788 and served in Eastleach Martin (Gloucestershire), Swinbrook and Burford (both in Oxfordshire) before becoming rector of Llanrug and Llanberis in Caernarfonshire, north Wales, holding these posts until his death on 22 November 1836. His son, Henry Bayley Williams, later became rector of Llanrug and Llanberis.
