An antique plan of "Battle of Aspern or Essling 21st & 22nd May, 1809 Sheet 2" by Alexander Keith Johnston. F.R.G.S. published by William Blackwood and Sons in 1848. The plan shows the positions of the Cavalry, Infantry and Artillery of the French and Austrians. In the battle Napoleon attempted a forced crossing of the Danube near Vienna, but the French and their allies were driven back by the Austrians under Archduke Charles. The battle was the first time Napoleon had been personally defeated in over a decade.
