An antique map by Alexander Keith Johnston. F.R.G.S. published by William Blackwood and Sons in 1848 with original hand colouring. The War of 1812, was a conflict fought between the United States and Great Britain over British violations of U.S. maritime rights. Britain effectively won by successfully defending its North American colonies. But for the British, the war with America had been a mere sideshow compared to its life-or-death struggle with Napoleon in Europe. It ended with the exchange of ratifications of the Treaty of Ghent.
