Malplaquet was the last great battle of the War of the Spanish Succession. The British, Austrians and Dutch commanded by the Duke of Marlborough and Prince Eugene of Savoy defeated the French under Villars and Boufflers, but at the cost of such severe casualties that they were unable to pursue their planned march on Paris. This map has a paper overlay pasted to it. When it is folded back, the reader sees the positions of troops at the start of the battle. When it is folded down, later positions are shown.
