An antique line engraving of a dandy which comes from a set of twenty-four caricatures that Matthew and Mary Darly published in 1771 in 'Macaronies, Characters, Caricatures &c' by Matthew and Mary Darly'. A 'Macaroni' represents young men bringing ridiculous fashion with them from Italy. This caricature is believed to represent John Pugh Pryse of Gogerddan and Rug. This is supported by a reference to him in a letter written by Evan Lloyd to David Garrick, dated 5th October 1771 from Lloyds home. "Mr Pryse the gentleman who brings you this is just on the start for Italy". Dated October 1st, 1772.
