John Evans, of Llwynygroes, Llanymynech, was born in 1723. He prepared the large Map of North Wales, engraved by his neighbour, Robert Baugh, and published it in 1795. An edition of this map on a reduced scale (about three miles to the inch) also engraved by Baugh, was not published until 1797 , two years after his death. A second edition of the reduction was published in August 1802 which included the addition below the scale of miles of an explanation of turnpike roads, crossroads and intended roads.
