This antique county map of Cardiganshire from a rare edition of "The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britain" by John Speed, published in 1616 with Latin text on the verso. The maps were generally published uncoloured, but a few copies of the atlas were coloured at the time. This map is from one of those scarce editions.

Published in 'An Atlas of England and Wales' by C. Saxton, 1579, this is the earliest printed map of the counties of Radnor Breknok Cardigan et Caermarden. Top left, below the Royal arms supported by a lion and dragon is the title cartouche. Bottom left, the arms of Saxton's patron - Thomas Seckford, with the motto "Industria Naturam Ornat". Bottom right, Saxton's name on a band around a compass and measuring scale. Has the water mark of the 'bunch of grapes' which is from one of the earliest impressions of the Atlas. Original hand colouring.

An antique county map by Jan Jansson published Amsterdam in 1644 with some early colouring and dutch text on the verso. Jansson produced an incomplete set of county maps which were published, as loose sheets and occasionally bound into atlases before publishing his complete atlas in 1646. They are scarce and are proper collector's maps, because the general public who just want a decorative map of their home county would rather have one of the later examples, full of heraldic shields and swag decorations. This map was later amended for the atlas publication of 1646, many with the addition of coats of arms, alteration of decorative features and cartouches.

This rare and curious antique map of 'Cardiganshire, Radnorshire and Breconshire' was produced from the research of Aristide Michael Perrot and engraved by Adrien Migneret, was published in G. B. Depping's L'Angleterre. Ou Description Historique et Topographique Du Royaume Royaume Uni De La Grande-Bretagn in 1823. This map, a copper plate engraving, has original outline hand colouring. Some maps show a single county, but more often two or more counties were joined to form a group which is similar in industry, agriculture and terrain.

Thomas Taylor is significant in a Welsh context for publishing the small county atlas 'The Principality of Wales exactly described' in 1718, which seems to have been the first published atlas relating entirely to Wales.
